After the war was declared in September 1939, the British Government had to cut down the amount of food brought in from abroad as German submarines started sinking shipping. This could have led to shortages of food supplies in the shops, and very high prices for what was left so rationing was introduced.
The rationing book
The rationing book was used instead of money. You would get 16 coupons a week. If you had some coupons left over, you would save up and buy what you wanted next week person was issued with a ration book; these contained coupons from their weekly allowance of certain foods. At first, only butter, bacon, sugar and ham were rationed. In March 1940, meat went on rationing, and in July; tea, margarine and cooking fats were also restricted. In the summer of 1940, ships carrying cargo were bombed, so the food couldn’t be transported over to England. Fortunately in the summer of 1941, new foods were appearing in shops everywhere.
LOCAL DISTRIBUTION
In each area, food control would be in the hands of a local committee, which would be set up at the outbreak of the war. It would include a few retail trading conditions. The principal duty of these Local Food Control Committees would be to look after the interests of the consumers. They were also responsible for supervising retail distribution. Shopkeepers would be licensed to trade by these Committees. Ordinarily, all existing shopkeepers would receive licenses.
